About Me

Being a music producer snuck up on me!

Originally, I was more interested in the technical side of recording and considered myself “just” a recording engineer. But over the years, certain projects naturally became more collaborative, and I found myself co-producing with the artists. It really just started with an artist turning to me and saying, “Bryan, what do you think? Are you hearing anything on this song you’d like to try?” Turns out, I had a lot of unexpressed ideas about how to make their song better! After that experience, I realized there was no point limiting myself to one role.

Now I concentrate on a more holistic approach to the recording process. It boils down to something like this: If the song, the arrangement, and the performance aren’t working, it doesn’t matter how pretty the mic sounds. Everything has to work together. I’ve spent my career taking songs apart and putting them back together again…understanding what works, what doesn’t, and why.

To that end, I started taking on more projects where I was the producer as well as the engineer. I find the best players (sometimes, that includes me) and the best studio for your project. I also write and arrange parts for strings and horns, and I specialize in vocal production. Getting the vocal just right is the hardest but most important part – the human ear is “tuned” to the vocal above all else.

A client once described me as a “patient perfectionist.” Making exceptional art takes time and effort, and sometimes you have to push through some rough takes to get to the gold. You can’t rush a masterpiece!

My goal when producing music is always - ALWAYS - to get to the heart of the song. For me, it’s about finding what’s unique and interesting about the artist or song and showcasing it. “Cookie-cutter” and “one-size-fits-all” are not in my vocabulary!

I’ve had the good fortune to work with some incredible artists. Highlights include session work on a Grammy-nominated album for Grammy winners Laura and Eric Sullivan, touring Europe with Courtney Marie Andrews (also a Grammy nominee), playing with Joan Osborne and Matt the Electrician in Alaska, sharing the stage with The Head and the Heart as a member of Matt Hopper and the Roman Candles (as well as sitting in with Josiah Johnson on his solo show), countless shows with Emma Hill and Small Souls, and plenty of session work with the likes of Mike Marsh (Avett Brothers, Dashboard Confessional), Jeffrey Martin, Anna Tivel, Silver Lake 66, and many others.

As a recording/mix engineer and producer, I've worked on countless albums for a wide variety of artists. I’ve tracked and mixed just about everything you can think of, from commercials for the Discovery Channel to hip-hop, opera, and everything in between. Finally, I found my home, the folk/Americana world!
